Waterproofing is basically the procedure of creating an object or structure waterproofed or water-proofed so it remains relatively unaffected by water or sustaining the ingress of moisture under specified circumstances. These objects may be utilized in underwater or wet environments, in such a way that they remain unaffected. They are created with sealants and applied with special techniques.
Most buildings are designed to a certain degree to accommodate natural atmospheric moisture infiltration and escape. Moisture accumulation can take place due to various reasons including climate, proximity to sources of rainwater runoff, use of the building for day-to-day activities, construction materials and neglect of maintenance practices. Exterior walls, roofs, flooring, windows and doors may experience various degrees of humidity and heat absorption. This may lead to damage to the material by the combination of these factors and cause mildew, mold and mildew growths. In case of existing structures, waterproofing of the interior as well as exterior walls are necessary to ensure longevity of the structure.
There are many types of materials available for waterproofing in Dubai and the selection is based on various aspects like the nature of application, location, nature of the building and budget. A bonding agent is sometimes used for waterproofing because it provides an extra layer of protection. This is often used in areas where the application of the material is likely to create problems, for example where it is used in the construction of a swimming pool. Reinforced plastic is a common form of waterproofing because it has a rigid seal and does not allow moisture to penetrate. This is often used where it is unlikely that excess water seepage will occur, for example on the outside of a swimming pool.
Mastic, fiberglass, acrylic and polystyrene are some of the most commonly used materials in waterproofing. All of these materials have different advantages. Acrylic is very effective at preventing water penetration but is relatively slow to set after hydrostatic pressure. Fiberglass is a good choice because it is very water resistant and very quick to set even under high hydrostatic pressure. Mastic is a good choice for exterior applications, but it can be damaged by freezing conditions and is not very effective at stopping leaks.
There are several types of waterproofing membrane available, including materials like rubber and silicone. These membranes stop moisture from penetrating the surface and prevent it from entering through gaps between the surface and the interior. These materials are excellent at preventing moisture, but they are not very effective at stopping hydrostatic pressure because they are not rigid.
